Waste generation and treatment, 1985-2016
You are currently viewing an older version of this indicator. The current indicator version with more recent data can be viewed via this link.
More and more waste is being recovered or incinerated, while less and less is being sent to landfill sites. 60 million tons of waste was generated in 2016 (excluding contaminated soil, dredged materials and animal manure).
Changes in amount of waste generated
In 2012 some changes were made to the monitoring of waste generation and treatment. Where possible, these changes were implemented from 2006, but some only took effect in 2007 or 2008. The amount of waste generated increased up to 2008, decreasing again to less than 60 million tons in 2012 and stabilised on 60 million tons (excluding contaminated soil, dredged materials and animal manure).
Changes in waste incineration, landfill and recovery
Waste recovery increased considerably in 2010. This is because several waste incineration plants were assigned as recovery plants. The amount of incinerated waste therefore also declined. The amount of waste sent to landfill has decreased steadily in recent years to approximately 1.2 million tons primary waste per annum.
